Did you suffer a negative side effect while taking Pradaxa?
Los Angeles personal injury attorneys at Martinian & Associates are currently taking on cases for patients
who were injured by the use of Pradaxa, an anticoagulant commonly prescribed
to prevent strokes, DVT, pulmonary embolism, and other blood clot-related
Pradaxa (Dabigatran) is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim. Some people
who used Pradaxa experienced excessive bleeding. This is a serious side
effect, so if you took Pradaxa and experienced excessive bleeding or another
serious side effect, then contact your doctor immediately and discuss
the possibility of an injury claim with our law firm.
Dabigatran: Increased Risk of Bleeding
Patients are encouraged to stop taking Pradaxa if they experience any of
the following side effects:
- Bleeding that continues for an irregularly long time
- Feelings of weakness
- Easy bruising
- Bleeding from the nose, mouth, vagina or rectum that is unusual
- Coughing or vomiting up blood
- Blood in urine
- Menstrual bleeding that is heavier and lasts longer than normal
Some people are also allergic to dabigatran and experience hives, throat
swelling, breathing difficulty and swelling of the face. Other, less serious
side effects may include rashes, nausea, upset stomach and diarrhea.
Because Pradaxa is an anticoagulant, it works by keeping the platelets
in the blood from clotting. Some patients may experience excessive thinning
leading to mild or severe bleeding. Among Pradaxa patients, as many as
one in ten experience some sort of bleeding side effect. Even minor trauma
such as a slip and fall can lead to excessive bleeding that does not stop,
especially in older patients (75 and older).
How Many People Have Died from Taking Pradaxa?
The number changes frequently, but hundreds of wrongful deaths have been
reported to the FDA that were allegedly caused by the patient's use
of Pradaxa. Internal bleeding that is caught too late, gastrointestinal
bleeding and hemorrhaging may lead to death. Our wrongful death lawyers
will pursue claims against Boehringer Ingelheim if your loved one's
death was connected to their use of the stroke-prevention drug Pradaxa.
Doctors could also be held liable for injuries and deaths if they improperly
prescribed the drug.
Who Should Not Be Taking Pradaxa?
Some patients should not be prescribed Pradaxa or they should be prescribed
a very low dosage. If one of the following describes you, then you should
speak with your doctor as soon as possible:
- Kidney problems
- Use of additional medications containing amiodarone, quinidine or verapamil
- Using other blood thinning drugs
- Have a history of stomach ulcers or a related condition
- Have recently experienced bleeding
- Recently underwent a surgical procedure
- Over the age of 75
