Los Angeles Actos Lawyer

Do You Have an Actos Lawsuit in California?

Actos is the brand name for the type 2 diabetes drug pioglitazone. This drug is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and by 2008, it was one of the best selling drugs in the nation. Unfortunately, many people taking Actos began to experience serious side effects, which prompted further research and testing. In 2011, the FDA released an updated warning that stated an increased risk of bladder cancer. Thorough patient counseling is extremely important before Actos is prescribed, as certain individuals are more prone to suffering serious side effects than others. If you or someone you love took Actos and suffered one of the side effects listed below, then you may have a claim.

A Los Angeles actos lawyer from Martinian Lawyers can help if you suffered one or more of the following serious side effects of Actos! Call today at (323) 850-1900.

Dangerous Side Effects of Actos (Pioglitazone)

Doctors should not prescribe Actos to certain individuals. You may be experiencing negative side effects because your doctor wrongfully prescribed you the drug. Some patients may also be able to hold Takeda Pharmaceuticals liable for failing to disclose the complete risks associated with the drug.

What Are the Side Effects of the Drug Actos?

Congestive Heart Failure
When probing into the side effects of Actos, the FDA discovered that 9.9 percent of patients who took Actos had to be taken to the hospital for congestive heart failure. This information came as a result of a 24-week study of a select group of Actos patients. If you begin to notice any signs of congestive heart failure while taking Actos, such as blurry vision, irregular heartbeat and chest pain, contact a doctor immediately.

Pregnancy Risks
Even in women who are taking some form of birth control, taking Actos in addition to this may cause ovulation, therefore leading to an increased risk of pregnancy. Taking Actos while pregnant may also cause fetal harm in some cases.

Bone Fractures (Women)
According to a study, the incidence of bone fracture in females taking Actos was 5.1 percent. While men may be at an increased risk of bone fracture while taking this medication, the majority of fractures observed in the study were in female patients.

Bladder Cancer
Urinary bladder tumors are a potential side effect of Actos. This drug should not be prescribed to individuals who are already at a heightened risk of bladder cancer or who have had bladder tumors in the past. The FDA began requiring that Actos include this risk on its warning label in 2011. Possible signs of bladder cancer include blood in urine, painful urination, lower abdominal or stomach pain and the frequent urge to urinate.

There are other types of negative side effects associated with taking Actos, such as an increased risk of hypoglycemia (for those taking multiple diabetes medications), macular edema and hepatotoxicity (liver damage).
