According to the 2010 Census, Los Angeles has the highest population of any city in California and the second highest population of any city in the country. When the entire Los Angeles-Long Beach-Santa Ana metropolitan area is taken into account, the population increases to 18 million people. Not only does the city have one of the largest populations, but it has one of the most ethnically diverse populations. It has been ranked as the third richest city in the world and the fifth most powerful and is a center of trade, media, fashion, and business.

Crimes rates in Los Angeles have been decreasing since the 1990s and reached an all-time low in 2009 when there were only 314 murders. In the past, the city was dominated by gangs like the American Mafia, but in more recent times, black and Hispanic gangs have come into power, up to 450 in all. Street gangs like the Crips, Bloods, and Sureños have earned Los Angeles the nickname "Gang Capital of America."
