Man Arrested After Bath Salt-Induced Attack on Neighbor

Bath salts are one of the newest types of substances to emerge into the drug abuse scene. Known as Ivory Wave, Purple Wave, and Vanilla Sky, this drug is made up of other synthetic substances like methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MPDV), mephedrone, and pyrovalerone. They actually have no connection with real bath salts, but were given the name in order to market them and avoid them from being labeled illegal. As this is a relatively new drug, research is still being done regarding the exact nature and side effects of these drugs. However, they are known to caused paranoia, suicide, hallucinations, and agitation.

A recent case in Glendale serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers of this drug. Twenty-year-old R.W.W. was arrested after barricading himself in his apartment for nearly an hour. Apparently, he had been swinging his shovel at birds when a neighbor in a nearby apparent building asked him to stop. Rather than cease, however, he turned on the woman and struck her in the head with his shovel. She was transported to a nearby hospital but her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

After reports of this incident reached the police, they went to his apartment to place him under arrest. However, difficulties arose regarding subduing him and bringing him into custody and the police had no other choice but to use a rubber bullet and Taser to be able to arrest him. He was then handcuffed and brought away in a wheelchair while yelling "God loves all you!" to those around him. To read more about this story, please click here.

The substances used to create bath salts were made illegal by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in October, so this man could facing penalties for a drug crime as well as assault and battery.
